The Republic of Liberia is a country located on the western coast of Africa. It is bordered by Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north, Côte d'Ivoire to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. As a sovereign state, Liberia gained independence on July 26, 1847, making it the first African republic.
The country was established by freed slaves and free people of color who returned to Africa from the United States and the Caribbean in the early 19th century. The capital city is Monrovia, named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, who supported the colonization efforts of freed slaves.
Liberia is known for its diverse geography, consisting of lush forests, mountains, savannahs, and a 579-kilometer coastline. The economy relies heavily on agriculture, particularly rubber production, as well as mining, manufacturing, and services sectors.
The political structure of the Republic of Liberia follows a presidential representative democratic system. The President serves as both the head of state and the head of government. The government is divided into three separate branches: executive, legislative, and judicial.
With a population of around 5 million people, Liberia is home to various ethnic groups, including the Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, and Mano, among others. While English is the official language, there are over 30 indigenous languages spoken throughout the country.
