Renal artery stenoses refer to the narrowing or constriction of the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys. These arteries, known as renal arteries, are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood to the kidneys for their proper functioning. Renal artery stenoses can occur due to the buildup of plaque or fatty deposits, a condition known as atherosclerosis, or due to the compression of the artery by adjacent structures.
The narrowing of the renal arteries can lead to a decrease in blood flow to the kidneys, which affects their ability to filter waste products from the blood. Treatment options for renal artery stenoses depend on the severity of the condition. In some cases, lifestyle modifications and medications to control blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels may be sufficient. However, for more severe cases, surgical procedures like angioplasty or stenting may be necessary to widen the narrowed artery and restore proper blood flow to the kidneys.
