Jamaica blackthorn, also known by its scientific name Zanthoxylum clava-herculis, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to Jamaica and other regions of the Caribbean. It belongs to the family Rutaceae and is part of the Zanthoxylum genus, which contains approximately 250 species commonly known as prickly ashes or Hercules' Clubs.
The Jamaica blackthorn tree typically grows up to 20 feet tall, sporting a dense, rounded crown of shiny, dark green, compound leaves. Its most distinctive feature is its sharp, stout thorns that cover the branches, which give the tree its common names "blackthorn" and "Hercules' Club."
The tree's bark and leaves are known for their strong aromatic qualities. In traditional medicine, various parts of the Jamaica blackthorn tree have been used for their potential medicinal properties. The bark is often used to alleviate toothache and other oral ailments, while the leaves are brewed into teas to relieve indigestion and other gastrointestinal issues.
Jamaica blackthorn trees also produce small, round fruits that start off green and eventually turn bright red as they ripen. These fruits are known as "clava berries" or "Hercules' berries." Although these berries are extremely hot and pungent, they have culinary uses, particularly in Caribbean cuisine, where they are used sparingly to enhance the flavor of certain dishes.
