Chiaris network, also known as the Chiaris syndrome, is a rare anatomical variation found in the right atrium of the heart. It is characterized by a network of fine strands or threads that cross the right atrium through the superior vena cava or its entrance. These threads form a delicate net-like structure within the chamber.
The Chiaris network is a remnant of the embryological development of the heart. During fetal life, the network serves as a temporary scaffold to direct the flow of oxygenated blood from the superior vena cava towards the foramen ovale, a small opening in the septum between the atria. It ensures that oxygenated blood bypasses the non-functioning lungs in the developing fetus, providing the necessary oxygen to the growing body.
In most cases, the Chiaris network disappears shortly after birth. However, in some individuals, it persists into adulthood. Although it is considered a harmless anatomical variant, it may rarely cause complications such as blood clots or endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart.
Chiaris network is often discovered incidentally during medical imaging examinations, such as echocardiography or contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans. It does not require treatment in the absence of symptoms or associated complications. However, if a blood clot forms on the network or infects the heart, medical intervention may be necessary to prevent further complications.
